Measures 20 meters high and weighs 18 tons
Very close to Francia Square there is another very special green space, ideal to continue the walk in the open air through Recoleta: the United Nations Plaza. What most attracts the attention of this place is the giant sculpture that can be seen in the center: the Generic Floralis. It was inaugurated in 2002, measures 20 meters high and weighs 18 tons. It is a gift that the architect Eduardo Catalano made to the City of Buenos Aires.
The sculpture is a large metal structure in the shape of a flower that sits on a mirror of water. From it, roads are born to different areas of the square, giving visitors to the place different perspectives of the flower. It is an ideal place to take pictures both day and night, since the sculpture is equipped with a mechanism that causes the petals to open during the day and close during the night. Moreover: at night, the flower emits from its interior a beautiful light of red color.
Hint: the flower is only open during the night four times a year. May 25 to commemorate the revolution, September 21 to celebrate the arrival of spring, December 24 for Christmas Eve and December 31 for the New Year’s Eve.
